J. Carino (b.1988) was born in Littleton, Colorado. He currently lives and works just outside of Los Angeles in Riverside, CA. The artist holds a BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York City.
Carino’s work is strongly informed by his lived experience as a queer artist. Also visible in his work is his lifelong love of nature; born and raised in Colorado, Carino grew up surrounded by mountains and lush landscapes. Expertly blending these two facets of self, Carino explores the meaning of the word “natural,” interrogating its heteronormative, procreative definition. Carino challenges heterosexual definitions of fertility and creation, enforcing the intertwinedness of sex, identity, and the natural world.
Carino has been exhibited internationally, with solo shows at Auxier/Kline in New York, Sow & Tailor in Los Angeles, and numerous group shows across the US and Europe at BEERS London and James Cohan Gallery, among others. He exhibited with Yossi Milo at The Dallas Art Fair earlier this year. Carino recently completed a residency at PM/AM in London, with a subsequent solo show in July 2024. He also completed a residency at The Art House San Clemente, California, in 2023. He made his Simard Bilodeau Contemporary debut as a part of Toi Moi Nous in 2024.
